Taebaeksan is the mesmerizing place to enjoy the “Snow Event” held on every year. It is the main peak of Taebaek mountain range which is 1,567 meters above sea level extends from north to south. During Snow Event, you can enjoy the wonderful landscape and fun winter activities in Taebaeksan. This mountain range stretches the city of Taebaek in Yeongwol-gun in Gangwon-do to Bonghwa-gun in Gyeongsangbuk-do.
This Snow Event was first started in 1995 and continuously celebrated as traditional festival every year. For Taebaek residents, this the busiest season with more than 5 million visitors. Celebrations startup from late January and visitors are cheered up with some fun activities include snow skating, snow rafting, playing folks on the ice and many more activities, all can be done on the floors of snow. This snow festival is hosted in Danggol Square, here you can see a wide variety of themed art pieces related to winter and massive ice sculptures.
For hiking enthusiasts, this is the correct time to climb on the top of Mount Taebaeksan. But this is a great challenge to complete this two hour trail. You really get amazed with white blanket of the mountain, which are nothing but freshly fallen snows. Hiking is not easy, so don’t forget to bring hiking boots, walking sticks and perfect wears to withstand the cold. From the top of Mount Taebaeksan you get the panoramic view of the surrounding mountain and village. At the top, you can also see ancient yew trees which blossoms during spring.
The Korean Government operates “Snow Flower Train” which goes round various mountains and offer breathtaking view of snow scenery. This train has stoppings on the mountain that provide passengers a chance to take photos on this scenic place. You can also take a visit to Manggyeongsa Temple in Taebaek which was constructed by Jajang, a silla dynasty (668-935) monk. Entry of this temple contains “Dragon Spring” which is the largest spring in Korea.
