Manali is a scenic resort town in India’s northern state of Himachal Pradesh. It’s a gateway for many adventurous activities like skiing, trekking, paragliding, rafting and mountaineering. Leh is the largest town and joint capital of Ladakh one of the Himalayan Kingdom. Local residents of India and tourists from all over the world came to Manali to undergo a cycling tour to Leh.

Bicycle tour from Manali to Leh is a nightmare ride for cyclists across the world and is the most challenging trip that you will ever take in your lifetime. To reach Leh you have to cross a 5 incredible high mountain passes namely Rohtang pass (3,978 m), Tanglang La pass (5,328 m), Baralacha La pass (4,890 m), Lungalacha La (5,059 m) and Naki La (4780 m). The ride is extremely challenging, and it surely tests your fitness and endurance skills. Slender air, terrible hairpin bends, restless climbs, and cruel weather and erratic terrain make this experts-only route. Approximately 10-12 days are taken to complete the 470 km long stretch of Manali to Leh Highway (NH3).

At the beginning of the tour from Manali, the temperature ranges from 27-28 degrees. As you reach a certain height the temperature absolutely falls down and stands below 10 degrees. Nights are usually cold and windy.

  • This route is a paradise for nature lovers who will get excited of its snow-capped mountains, scenic lakes and clear blue skies.   • The cycling route is open only for a few months, primarily from Late May/Early June to Mid-September.

Journey Schedule:

  • At Day 1: Arriving at Manali
  • Take a visit to Nagga, Roerich Art Gallery and Tibetan Bazaar. Make a night stay at Manali. Make a night stay at Manali.
  • At Day 2: RidefromManali to Marhi (35 km, 1250 m)
  • Be preparing to cross many hair pin bends and the rough & muddy Rohtang Pass. Make a night stay at camps.
  • At Day 3: Marhi to Sissu via Rohtang La (55 km, 1600 m)
  • Cross the Stream of Khoksar River to reach the foothills of the Pir Panjal to find the narrow and easy route to Sissu, located on the right shore of Chandra River. For night stay, Home Stays are available at Sissu.
  • At Day 4: Sissu to Jispa – 53 km, cross Tandi and Keylong to reach Jispa
  • Start cycling from Lahaul Valley to Tandi, which is located at the confluence of the Chandra River and Bhaga River, well known by people as Chandra Bhaga River. Cross Tandi and Keylong and travel on the low gradient plane to reach Jispa. Plan for camping at the banks of Bhaga River.
  • At Day 5: Jispa to Zing Zing Bar – 31 km
  • At a distance of 10 km from Jispa, a road to Darcha starts and also Patseo climb begins. The rolling terrain of Patseo takes you to the Zing Zing Bar.
  • At Day 6: Travel from Zing Zing Bar to Sarchu (47 km) via Baralacha La standing at an elevation of 5030 m is a difficult mountain ride.
  • At Day 7: Sarchu to Whisky Nala (47 km) via Nakee La, a short downhill ride takes you to Whisky Nala
  • At Day 8: Whisky Nala to Debring (81 km) via Lachung La, Debring lies just before the rise of Tanglang La
  • At Day 9: Tso Kar to Lato (53 km) via Taglang La which is the world’s second largest motorable pass at an elevation of 5,360 m. It is really challenging but if you reach the top, you really get satisfied.
  • At Day 10: Lato to Leh (70 km), Cross the Indus River to catch the road that leads to Leh.
  • At Day 11: Leh to Khardung La (40 km); Khardung La is the World’s highest motarable road in the world takes you to 5359 m height. It offers spectacular view of Indus valley in the South and Zanskar range in the North. Celebrate completion of the adventurous trip with your friends.
  • At Day 12: Departure from Leh

About Safety:

The road is highly safe for cyclists along with travelers travelling via buses, cars or motorbikes. Until reaching the Rohtang pass you should be very careful, the road is good, but the traffic seems heavy.
