Luagan Lalak Forest Recreation Park is a serene place to view Brunei’s vibrant sunrise. As a part of the Labi Hills Forest Reserve, Luagan Lalak Forest Recreation Park occupies 270 hectare in Labi Belait district. Lugan is a name derived from Malay word ‘luagan’ refers to huge non-flowing water body and Lalak is a wrong pronunciation of ‘dalak’ refers to snakehead fish which is common in Brunei waters.
Lalak is an alluvial freshwater lake. During summer season, the water level slows down and the valley is enclosed by a gorgeous field of sedges which is a grass like plant with stems and flowers. But in wet season all are submerged in water. Around the Luagan Lalak Forest Recreation Park area, there are footpaths and a 200-metre wooden bridge that extends along the lake. Watching sunrise or sunset from the gazebos is mesmerizing. Inside the park there are shelters and benches are perfectly present to enjoy the views. It is also a great place for bird watching and meditating in the tranquil surrounding. You can see huge rice fields, orange farm, papaya farm and other local fruits in Labi district.
It is about 100 km and takes 45-minute drive along the highway from Bandar Seri Begawan by car. From Sungai Liang, it is about 25 kilometres. Public transport is not available for this area. Visiting Luagan Lalak Forest Recreation Park is a great experience because walking through the forest reserve offers panoramic views and an ideal place to get relax.
