Al-Badiyah an oldest mosque of UAE is locted on Badiyah which is a smallest village north of Fujairah. This weird mosque was built using mud and stones available from surroundings. Calculating the age of the Al-Badiyah mosque is still intriguing among archaeologists. This mosque does not have records to know about its history. The Portuguese fort behind the mosque gave idea for findings its age.
The Al-Badiyah mosque built at the foot of the hill has four domes on its roof was only supported by central pillar which also forms the ceiling. The central pillar divides the inner space of the mosque into four divisions. The wooden doors of the Al-Badiyah mosque welcome you into the prayer hall. Inside the prayer hall you can see decorated windows, normal pulpit and arches. Qurans stacks in the walls of the mosque are useful during prayers. The prayer hall also includes a mihrab made of stones and coral blocks. The Al-Badiyah mosque incorporates two watch towers on its surrounding looking over the village.
The Al-Badiyah mosque is still in function and daily prayers are conducted in the mosque. The archaeological center of Fujairah in collaboration with the University of Sydney (Australia’s first university) from 1997-98 and The Archaeology and Heritage Department of Fujairah made serious investigation on this site. They conclude that the Al-Badiyah mosque was believed to be built in 1446 AD in addition with two watch towers.
Tourists of Fujairah take a visit to this mosque to explore its unrevealed history. Non-Muslim visitors are also allowed freely inside the mosque. But strict dress code is followed for both men and women. Women’s have to cover their heads and hands. Footwear’s should be removed outside the mosque. The Al-Badiyah mosque is also referred as “Ottoman Mosque”.
