A Walk among the God’s in Hallasan Mountain

Hallasan Mountain in Jeju Island is one the three main mountains in South Korea. Hallasan is the highest mountain in South Korea and is also a shielded volcano. Hallasan Mountain was worshipped by locals because they believed that god and soul live in this mountain.

Hallasan Mountain is recognized as National Park in 1970. This park served as home for 1,800 kinds of plants and 4,000 species of animals along with mammals, reptiles and insects. Hallasan National Park is designated as UNESCO Biosphere reserve and World Heritage site is filled with walking trails. Hiking to the Hallasan is too hard some slopes are steep. So you can take lot of water and snacks during climbing.

Hallasan has five hiking trails and each has different time duration and distance to reach.

  • Gwaneumsa Trail – 8.7 km
  • Eorimok Trail – 4.7 km
  • Seongpanak Trail – 9.6 km
  • Yeongsil Trail – 3.7 km
  • Donnaeko Trail – 9.1 km

You have to start your trail before 12pm. People who came after 12 pm are not allowed for hiking to reach the top. Seongpanak Trail is the most beautiful trail to reach the Hallasan Mountain offering breathtaking views of the surrounding village and forest. While hiking you can notice that the Jeju Island is full of basalt rock formations. If you are lucky, you can see Crater Lake at the top. This lake is visible only after the rain. During spring, the trails are filled with white snow all around and are the perfect time for hiking.

You can use the following road number to these five trails by car. Use road number 1117 to reach Gwaneumsa Trail, road number 1139 to reach Eorimok Trail, road number 1131 to reach Seongpanak Trail, road number 1100 to reach Yeongsil Trail and road number 1115 to reach Donnaeko Trail. Some buses are also available for these trails fron Jeju city.
