Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin Mosque is located in Brunei’s capital city on the banks of the Brunei River. This mosque stands bravely in front of the artificial lake. A ritual stone boat stands on the artificial lake is a replica of a 16th-century Sultan Bolkiah (29th and current Sultan and Yang di-Pertuan of Brunei) Mahligai Barge, which was used as a stage for Quran-reading competitions. It is the most splendid mosque in Asia Pacific and a major historical site which attracts the tourists very well.
The construction of Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin mosque was initiated by Omar Ali Saifuddin III who was the 28th Sultan of Brunei. It was completed in 1958. This mosque is the great example of Islamic Architecture and serves symbol of Islamic faith in Brunei. The structure of this mosque was designed by Rudolfo Nolli. Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin Mosque combines the Mughal architecture and Malay styles in its design.
The large golden dome is the highlight of the mosque and it serves as landmark for the city. Its main minaret provides panormic view of the city from top, stands at a height of 171 feet. This minaret top can be accessed through elevator. Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin Mosque with marble minarets is surrounded by trees and colorful flowers in garden. The prayer hall of the mosque has beautifully carved arches ways which can hold up to 3000 worshippers at a time.
The marbles used for the construction and decoration of the mosque are imported from Italy. The mosques gigantic door made of timber are imported from Philippines. The granite from Shanghai (Municipality in China), stained glass and the chandeliers from England (Country of the UK), the carpets from Saudi Arabia (Middle Eastern country) and Belgium (country in Western Europe) make this mosque look adorable.
Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin Mosque is opened for public in certain hours a day. Dress codes are strictly followed in the mosque. It is the only mosque of worship for muslim community in Brunei.
