Malay Technology Museum which is close to Brunei Museum is located in Kota Batu (Historical area), Bandar Seri Begawan. Malay Technology Museum displays the tradition, culture and activities of ancient Malay people in Brunei. The Royal Dutch Group of companies combined with the Sultanate’s independence in 1984, donated the building for Malay Technology Museum. But it was officially opened on 29 February, 1988 by His Majesty the Sultan of Brunei. Malay Technology Museum contains 3 galleries.
The first gallery was called by “Water Village Traditional House Gallery”. This gallery exhibits the structure of houses during late 19th century up to the mid 20th century in the water village of Kampong Ayer.
The second gallery was called by “Water Village Traditional Technology Gallery”. Handicrafts and cottage industries in water village are portrayed in this gallery. It also includes some displays of man who are working in boat construction, smithing of gold, smithing of silver, casting of brass, weaving of clothes and making roofs, etc.
The third gallery is “Inland Traditional Technology Gallery” which displays the technologies of inland people. It shows the miniature model of Kedayan (Ethnic group in Brunei), Dusun (Orchard) and Murut houses and a Punan hut. Third gallery also had a display of sago and brown sugar production and handicrafts.
Entrance for the museum is free and is a two storey building which is perfect to take photos inside. It is one of the best places for visitors to know about the history and tradition of Brunei Malay’s in water village.
